Our second full day in Germfask. I'll skip all the meal info beyond Carl's lunch which was lake perch. He's been longing it for ever since we got here, and he wasn't disappointed.
Today we visited the Seney National Wildlife Refuge which is just a few miles from here and is the main reason we stayed at this campground. The Refuge has a very informative visitors center which is staffed by a couple who are native Yoopers, as they say. The husband says he actually knew Jim Harrison when they lived in Grand Marais, so Carl was very excited to talk to him. The visitor center guide told us that he helped the author out of his kayak many a time; Harrison was too drunk to get out by himself.
The refuge has a 7 mile long driving trail that winds throughout the ponds and marshes that are home to countless mammals, birds, and fish. We drove at turtle speed, stopping frequently, to take pictures and just listen to the sounds of the birds. We mostly saw geese, swans, loons, and turtles, and one eagle that just perched high in a dead tree neighboring her/his next. It took us nearly two hours to cover the 7 miles; and we loved every inch.
Just a few of the hundreds of swans that live here.
